August 2006 Bulgarian Camp

This past summer, from August 20-27, we went to a Bulgarian church camp which was sponsored by the Bulgarian Baptist Union. It was in central Bulgaria, in the mountains, near a little village named Karandila. We left on a bus from Sofia, and the ride to the camp took about six hours. We were hungry, carsick and tired when we got there!

Most of the kids and leaders spoke only Bulgarian, so we had to survive with our sketchy Bulgarian skills. We had a really hard time at first and were very homesick, but then we got used to it, and enjoyed ourselves. Our rooms were like rustic hotel rooms with four twin beds and a bathroom in each room. We roomed together with two other boys, Pepi and Svetlo. We also made two good friends named Rosen and Toni. Kids from all over Bulgaria attended the camp.

The mornings started with breakfast, then we had devotions in our rooms. After that we had our Bible lesson and a small activity to review what we had learned. The week's theme was Parables of Jesus. Then we had lunch. After a small break we went down to play football (soccer) at a nearby field. This was our favorite part of camp. Sometimes we had crafts after that but other times we just continued playing football. After dinner we had game time. We played some games that the teachers had come up with (some were rather boring). We also played "Koy Iska da Stana Missioner?" or "Who Wants to be a Missionary?"--a take-off from "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?". There were three questions each: easy, Bible, and hard. They were all multiple choice. We also were told a story of a boy named Samuelito who learns about Jesus from a missionary who comes to his town. Then it was bed time which we were always ready for.

The only time we did not follow this schedule was on Wednesday when we went on a hike and picnic. That evening, instead of games, we had a campfire outside. It was really fun but we were missing one thing: S'mores!!! They do not have marshmallows or graham crackers here in Bulgaria. We'll have to remember to bring the supplies for S'mores next year!!! Also on Saturday we had a talent show. Some of the kids sang and some did skits. We did a quiz show based on our favorite movie-Star Wars. The talent show was really long (like 3 hours).

The ride home seemed shorter than the ride there because we were looking forward to getting back to our home. Nathan was ready to stay a week more, but A.J. was ready to get back. All in all it was a good experience and a really fun week!!! We hope we can go back next year!!!
